Gerald W. Lunt

Gerald Welliver Lunt, 83, of Berryville, VA, died May 7, 2025, at Rose Hill Nursing Home in Berryville. He was born on Aug. 4,1941, in Lincoln, NE, the son of the late Anthon Hunter Lunt of Cedar City, UT, and Elouise Bratager Lunt of Sioux Falls, SD.

Jerry moved with the family from Lincoln to Washington, DC, where he attended John Phillip Sousa Junior High School and Eastern High School.  The family then relocated to Alexandria, VA when he was 16. In 1959, Jerry graduated from Francis C. Hammond High School.  He worked his way through college and graduated from George Washington University with a B.A. in Psychology.  He then pursued graduate studies in the field of Criminology.

A life-long civil servant, Jerry worked in several departments of the federal government, including the Department of Justice under Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, the National Archives, the Department of the Navy and, finally, the US Postal Service.

While serving in the Air National Guard out of Andrews Air Force Base, Jerry was deployed to Osan Air Base in South Korea during the “Pueblo Crisis” in 1968.  A fervently patriotic and civic-minded American, Jerry was a longtime member of Berryville VFW Post 9760, American Legion Post 41, the Korean War Veterans Association and the Moose Lodge. His avocations included singing barbershop with childhood friends, as well as collecting and showing his many antique cars. Jerry was active in the Shenandoah Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) and the Early V-8 Ford Club.  A deeply devout Christian, he co-authored a theological book with Dr. William Isaac Cooper.

Keen to reconnect with his mother’s Norwegian roots, Jerry was active for some years in the Washington Chapter of the Sons of Norway.  He also had a deep love of history as expressed in his collection of Depression-era memorabilia. In the mid-1980s, Jerry supported living history as a Civil War re-enactor, serving in The Stonewall Brigade - Company D of the 27th Virginia - and participating in mock battles for the public around the state. He became a resident of Berryville in 2001.

Jerry is survived by his brother, Geoffrey Hunter Lunt (Amy Louviere) of Oak Hill, VA; his nephew, Jason Hunter Lunt (Francisca) of Pensacola, FL; his niece, Jennifer Ann Lacy of Woodbridge, VA; great nieces, Maya, Ana Maria and Bianca; great nephew, Roy; and great-grand niece Layla.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 P.M. officiated by Reverend Tyler Phillips, at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville, Virginia.  Burial will immediately follow at Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.  Military honors will be provided by the Clarke County Honor Guard.

Following the interment, will be a reception at the VFW Post 9760, 425 S. Buckmarsh St., Berryville, VA.  All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to John H. Enders Volunteer Fire Company & Rescue Squad, 9 S. Buckmarsh St., Berryville, VA, 22611.
