Ray Emory Ewing, 92 of Winchester, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center.
Ray was born in 1933 in Stephens City, VA, the son of the late Frank and Hazel Ewing.
He was a graduate of James Wood High School, Class of 1952. Ray enlisted in the United States Navy joining on October 13, 1952, during the Korean War where he proudly served on the USS Savage (DER-386). Ray was assigned to escort Squadron 5 at Seattle, WA and their mission was to function as the seaward of the DEW Line and was a “tin can soldier”. He was discharged on October 12, 1956, after proudly serving for 4 years.
He worked at the Viscose Plant in Front Royal for 4 years and then retired as Postmaster in Stephens City for the United States Postal Service after 32 years. Ray also served as Mayor of Stephens City from 1994-2010.
Ray was a member of the Korean War Veterans, Chapter 313, a lifelong member of Stephens City UMC, a member of Stephens City Lions Club since 1960 (65 years) and holds a Melvin Jones Fellowship one of the highest honors in the Lions Club. He volunteered as a firefighter with Stephens City Volunteer Fire & Rescue.
Ray enjoyed helping make apple butter with friends at the Lions Club, and he enjoyed antiquing, and was the proprietor of the antique shop in Stephens City – Daze of Yore. He was very much a “one of a kind” man and “salt of the earth”. Ray loved to entertain for his family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening, chair caning, was an avid reader of historically based works and a known history buff. Ray made lifelong friends and the guys he served with in the Navy are still his close friends and “brothers”.
He is survived by his wife, Bettye whom he married on August 7, 2010; daughter, Pamela Ewing Janney (Becky) of Richmond, VA; son, Michael Ray Ewing (Tierney) of Arlington, VA; grandson, Alexander Michael Ewing of Annapolis, MD.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Mary Anna Layman Ewing; sisters, Frances Carbaugh, Betty York, and Janet Schaumburg and brothers, Arthur Ewing, Thomas Ewing, and Donald Ewing.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 2pm with a service to be conducted at 3pm all at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor John Lock and Pastor Jack Keep.
