Ben Ritter

Ben Ritter, of Winchester, VA, died Monday, April 14, 2025 at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born in Winchester, June 6, 1936; son of the late Elmer P. Ritter and Dorothy Mae Chrismore Ritter.

Ben was a motion picture projectionist, he served in the US Air Force and retired as a transportation analyst from Walker-Tenneco, Harrisonburg, VA. His last job was at Handley Library. While in elementary school, Ben developed an interest in Civil War history and a few years later in local history. He perused these two subjects to the end of his life.

Ben was a life member in the National Rifle Association, Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society, The Company of Military Historians, and an annual member of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Foundation, and the Kernstown Battlefield Association.

He married the love of his life, Betty L. Wingfield Ritter, April 4, 2000 after a twenty-year courtship.

Along with his wife he is survived by his children, Darrell B. Frye, Pimmie M. Bly (Todd), Tonya Y. Kerns (Mike), Kristine L. Butler (Danny) and Michelle D. Wells (Daniel); ten grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren and his cousins, Larry T Sutler and Debbie Schill.

Ben was laid to rest in the historic Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester
