Richard W. Smith, Sr.

Richard Wilson Smith, Sr., 84, of Winchester, Virginia, died Tuesday, August 19, 2014, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, West Virginia.
 
Mr. Smith was born in Franklin, West Virginia, the son of the late Justin and Bessie Smith.  He was a Veteran having served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, achieving the rank of SFC and receiving a Purple Heart.  Mr. Smith was a retired steelworker and crane operator with Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Maryland.  He attended Rosedale Baptist Church.  Mr. Smith was also a member of the Korean War Veterans Association and a lifetime member of the NRA and the AMA (American Motorcycle Association).  He was an avid hunter, a member of the Piney Run Hunting Club in Pennsylvania for 45 years and loved NASCAR and auto racing.
 
He married Dorothea Mae (“Dot”) Poling on July 20, 1957, in Baltimore, Maryland.
 
Surviving with his wife is daughter, Sherry Lynn Bohnenkamp of Winchester; sons, Richard Wilson Smith, Jr. (Pamela) of Capon Bridge, West Virginia, John Kevin Smith (Crystal) of Winchester, Virginia; grandchildren, Katie Smith of Capon Bridge, WV, Tori Smith, Cameron Smith, Justin Bohnenkamp, and Isabella Smith all of Winchester, Leroy Kuh (Kelly) of Fisher, WV, Christina Graham and Christopher “Buck” Graham both of Winchester; great grandchildren, Madison Smith of Winchester, Hailee Jenkins and Trey Jenkins, both of Capon Bridge, WV, Kenedy Kuh and Will Kuh both of Fishers, WV; sisters, Judy Bayliss, Carolyn Brovey (Stan), Pauline Frye (Delbert), Bernice Garris (Frank) and brother, Clemmitt “Bootie” Smith (Sandy).
 
Three sisters, Shirley Smith, Annalee Fernandez and Martha Newlin and four brothers, Carroll, Charles, Robert and Justin Smith, preceded him in death.
 
The family will receive friends on Friday evening, from 6 to 8 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
 
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Pastors Ken Smith and Paul Markee officiating.  Interment will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Hayfield, Virginia.  Military Honors accorded by VFW Group 2123.
