Thomas Anthony Benedett
Thomas A. Benedett passed away peacefully on September 11, 2015 in Bethesda, MD. Tom, as he was known to family and friends, was 86 years old. A 25 year resident of Winchester VA, he moved to the Byron House in Potomac, MD one year ago. Thomas was the beloved husband of his late wife of 59 years, Mary Ann Benedett. He was the much loved father of Kathryn Benedett Lupoli (Robert Lupoli) of Westport CT, Frank Benedett (Coleen Benedett) of Knoxville, TN, Jean BenedettMatich (Nicholas Matich III) of Mclean, VA and Karen Greenzaid (Michael Greenzaid) of Potomac, MD and the beloved grandfather of Nicholas Matich IV, Emily Matich Duffy, Alexandra Greenzaid, Nathaniel Greenzaid, and William Thomas Lupoli, great-grandfather of Thomas, Edith, and John Henry Matich.
Thomas was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a B.S. in Geology and J.D from the School of Law. After serving as an Officer in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Thomas earned his law degree, and then went on to career in Human Resources. He successfully rose through the ranks of business and retired as a Corporate Officer and Executive Vice President of Human Resources for United Telecom, which later became SPRINT.
Throughout his life Tom loved his family, reading, and nature. He met his wife, Mary Ann on a blind date and it was love at first sight. They were devoted to one another and Tom cared for Mary Ann through the final illness which took her life in 2012. Tom was an avid gardener and outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing and participating in his hiking group. A voracious reader and meticulous planner, he loved guiding his children and grandchildren through everything from college searches to home improvement.
The family will receive friends at Pumphrey Funeral Home, 7557 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD on Tuesday, September 15th from 7-9 PM. The funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, MD on Wednesday, September 16th at 10 AM. He will be interred in Winchester with his beloved Mary Ann. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Victory Housing of the Archdiocese of Washington.
